If the root is cool the top will bear much more sun-shine, but the shaded, woody spots are where it looksbest. This grand Lily well planted and left alone forthree years will probably then be at its best; afterthis the bulbs will be likely to have increased so muchthat it will be well to divide them. Field mice are mischievous enemies, eating off thetops of the young shoots when they are a few inchesout of the ground. Sometimes one may see naked-topped stems rising a foot or two with the leafy topgone.
