( x x cm), Furniture, New England cabinetmakers often used birch veneer as a less expensive substitute for imported satinwood. The crotch-veneer panels on the drawers of this chest were carefully book-matched. The drop-panel in the center of the base is characteristic of Portsmouth, New Hampshire-style case furniture in the Federal period
