This colourful street scene image at St John's Gardens shows the memorial to the Liverpool Kings Regiment who fought with distinction during the South African Boer Wars with the soldiers from that era being overlooked by the patron Saint of Britannia. Prior to the gardens the site was the city's first hospital in 1749, then seaman's hospital in 1752, and later a cemetery. The site was demolished during the building of St George's Hall with the gardens being established in 1904 as a general public amenity.
