Foetal head. Macro photograph of a section through the head of a full term foetus. The brain is at top (white). Below the brain is the nasal cavity (centre), with the nasal septum running down its middle, and the two eyes (blue). At bottom is the mouth, with the tongue at its centre. At the corners of the mouth are four tooth buds (green). These are aggregations of tissue that will form into teeth. ÂEither side of the mouth are areas of fat (yellow) known as buccal, or Bichat's, fat pads. These areas are especially developed in infants and are thought to provide support to the cheeks when the infant is sucking.
