Leibniz's calculating machine. Illustration of the calculating machine, or stepped reckoner, invented by the German mathematician and philosopher Gottfried Leibniz (1646-1716) around 1672. This was the first machine that could divide, multiply and find square roots, as well as add and subtract. Illustration from the first edition of Leibniz's 'Opera Omnia' (1768).
