The sulphurous and carbonic acidgases which are constantly in the tunnelhave a most destructive action on all a piece of gauntleted track runningthrough it. The corresponding railsof each track approach within 7ins. of each other. An arrangement ofthis kind, while it has the advantage ofeconomical tunnel construction, practi-cally contracts a double track road to. \l GH , ON THE \NI.\ R.\ Eastbound and Both Westbound Tracks Gauntleted. sorts of material which are used in thevarious parts of the warning light andplug circuits. Any exposed metal isdoomed by the rapid corrosive action ofthe gases. The porcelain sockets of theelectric lights crack if exposed in theuneven temperature, and lay bare luetalconnections which soon are eaten heads of nails, countersunk in woodand covered with putty, are attacked asthe putty disintegrates. The head isspeedily corroded and in time the nail isactually so sharpened as to facilitate thefalling away of the wood and the open-ing up of joints for the greedy con-sumption of more metal by the heavilycharged gases with which they are sur-rounded. The safety devices in this tunnel arecontinually in such an actively hostileatmosphere that it has been found neces-sary to design and manufacture speciallamp sockets and plug boxes.
