Dunite rock. Polarised light micrograph of dunite, an ultramafic (low silica content) rock consisting nearly entirely of olivine. Here, the olivine (coloured due to the polarisation), forms a granular, densely packed structure. Dunite also usually contains some chrome-spinel, which is opaque and thus black here in this thin section. This image has been obtained using cross-polarised light (or 'crossed nichols').
