the remains of the church of Our Lady of Bad Counsel - 10th century (Santa Maria del Buonconsiglio), old quarter, Bari, Puglia region (Apulia), Italy

In a picturesque location, fully immersed in one of the most beautiful parts of Bari vecchia stands the site of the Church of Santa Maria del Buon Consiglio. Here today we can admire the ruins of the ancient church, mistakenly demolished during the 20th century: we find two rows of columns with bases and capitals, the division of the plan into three naves with visible apses and an early medieval mosaic floor. Just think that almost all the information we have about this church is of a legendary nature. In fact, it seems that the church was originally called Santa Maria del Popolo and that it dates back as far as 946. Legend has it that in this year a clash took place between commoners and nobles. The commoners wanted to end the nobility's privilege of having their brides accompanied by some Byzantine gentleman or official. This custom was strongly disliked by the people, as it caused jealousy. After the clash, the custom was cancelled and on this occasion the church would change its name to Santa Maria del Buon Consiglio, because of the wise decision.
