Pfeiffer Beach, a great detour on the drive along Californian Highway 1, Big Sur. It's famous for great scenery and purple sand.

Pfeiffer Beach is worth a detour from Californian Highway 1. A difficult decent from the highway but well worth the effort. Pfeiffer is a crescent shaped beach known for its huge double rock formation through which waves crash. The beach is often windy and dangerous for swimming. The other famous thing about the beach is its sand. Look for its purple colour sand. This shows up especially when wet. It is caused by manganese garnet washed down from the surrounding hills.
