Rameswur – Caves of Ellora, Image of entrance

Ellora Caves: The caves are located in Marhashtra State in India and the site is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ‘caves’, 34 in number, are in fact man-made, carved into the face of the Charanandri Hills. The sculpted structures in the several different caves represent monastic and religious aspects of Buddhist, Hindu and Jain religions. The entrance to the Rameswur has carvings of female figures on its sides. Drawn by G. Cattermole from a sketch by Captain R. Elliot RN and engraved by W. Woolnoth
