The South African War Memorial, also known as the Boer War Memorial at the end of Edward VII Avenue, Cathays Park, Cardiff, Wales
The South African War Memorial, also known as the Boer War Memorial, stands in Cathays Park in Cardiff, Wales. It was erected in 1908 and unveiled by General Sir John French on 20 November 1909 to honor the victims of the Second Boer War. This Grade II listed structure was sculpted by the English artist Albert Toft. The memorial features a bronze winged figure of peace holding an uprooted olive tree, standing on an orb atop a Portland Stone plinth with granite steps. Metal lampstands with glass globes adorn each corner. On the western side, a seated male figure symbolizing war and courage holds a sword and leans on a shield. On the eastern side, a seated female figure representing grief holds a wreath and also leans on a shield.
