Taiwanese aborigine volunteers in the Imperial Japanese Army known as the Takasago Volunteers (高砂義勇隊) attend an award ceremony in recognition for their distinguished service in New Guinea, February 1944. Note the traditional Taiwanese service knives affixed to their belts. The Takasago Volunteers were known for their aptitude in jungle warfare, serving with distinction in a variety of supportive and frontline combat roles during the Pacific War.
