Colonel Henry Parke Airey, commanding 1st New South Wales Bushmen's Contingent, South African Field Force, 1902. Airey (1842-1911) won the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in Burma in 1886, almost certainly making him the first Australian to receive the medal.
