Thegreat central altar in this church, is the gift of theMaffitt family, at a cost of $30,000. This University possesses a select and valuablelibrary; a museum of natural history; a collectionof scientific instruments; a laboratory, etc., in-cluding many curious and costly objects. Amongthe treasures, are nearly one hundred large folios,donated by the British Government in 1834—the S/UNT LOUIS. 73 SAINT LOUIS famous Doomsday Book—and various state University has an exceedingly interesting col-lection of paintings, possibly the oldest and mostvaluable in the city, some of them being more thantwo hundred years old, and painted by masters ofthe old world. Among them, The Cobbler byTeniers the Younger. This and another belong toa set of twelve paintings, representing theTrades. Nos. i to 9 are in Munich; St. Sebas-tian, an original from the School of Andrea delSarto. A Soldier piercing the Side of Christ,marked on the back as a sketch by Rubens, thewriting in Dutch and over two hundred years large painting on wood representing scenes ofthe Crucifixion, is a Dutch painting, but Florentinecostumes, painted by Erassimus Winckler, A.
