Associated with the early days of St. Louis there isone name conspicuous for public enterprise, liberalityand earnest desire to build up the city and make it greatand attractive. It is that of Major William Christy, whocame to St. Louis in 1804, and in the year 1819 com-pleted and occupied as his residence the stone buildingat Second and Monroe streets, in which he used to dis-pense his hospitality in the large and warm hearted stjle. Taylor was in command of the UnitedStates military post at Prairie Du Chien, Jefferson Davis,then a lieutenant in the army, was assigned to duty there,but shortly after his arrival and before his baggage hadbeen received, he was ordered to attend court martialas one of the court.
