All the tendencies of Europe at that period are reflectedin his operas: Reisers model, in his first works; the Venetian modelin his Agrippina—the model of Scarlatti and Steffani in the firstoperas at London, into which English influences, especially inrhythm, were soon introduced; then he rivalled Bononcini; thenthere were great efforts of genius to create a new musical drama, asGiulio Cesare, Tamerlano, Orlando; then came the charmingopera-ballets inspired by France, Ariodante, Alcina; then theoperas in which the opera-comique and the lightened style of thesecond half of the century appear, Serse, Deidamia.
