He was created a baronet in 1611. He was Member of Parliament for East Retford in the 1624 and the 1625 Parliaments. He supported Charles II in the Siege of Hull (1642). He was captured and imprisoned in the Tower of London from 1644 to 1648. While in prison he published Characters and Elegies in 1646, and some other works.
