Chinese lantern flower skeleton. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the decaying calyx of a flower of the chinese lantern plant (Physalis sp.). The tissues of the calyx have decomposed leaving the fine network of veins. The calyx of the chinese lantern is an inflated bright orange papery structure that encloses the fruit of the plant. Magnification: x15 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
