In the shelter of these grow immense colonies of hepat- icas, spring beauties, spring cress, bloodroot, Canada ginger, Jack-in-the-pulpit, Dutchman's breeches, squirrel corn, tooth- wort, yellow and white adder's-tongues, phlox, collinsia, pol- emonium, three trilliums, including T. declinatum, bellworts, many violets, etc. In the early spring" the ground is literally carpeted with flowers. It is no exaggeration to say that one cannot move about in the woods without treading on them. Our illustration will give some idea of the abundance and luxuriance of the spring flora in this region. The uprooting of these multitudes of plants should give food for thought to those sentimental plant protectionists who.
