HE New York Nursery and Childs Hospital wasfounded in 1910, by the consolidation of the Nurseryand Childs Hospital and the New York Infant Asylum. During the years 1848 to 1854, the attention of thepublic was drawn by the Reports of the Superintendentsof Police to the number of vagrant children in the Cityof New York and to the growing crime of infanticide. The officialsestimated that there were 30,000 homeless children in the city help meet this evil, the Nursery and Childs Hospital was foundedin 1854, under the title of The Nursery for the Children of PoorWomen. The Nursery was in St. Marks Place and later moved to alarger house at Sixth Avenue and 15th Street. For the first few years itacted only as a nursery for the children of poor women. In 1857 its workwas extended and it became also a Childs Hospital, the first to befounded in the United States. At that time, no hospital in this Cit
