A hillside of nikau palms at their most southerly extent, on NZ's west coast
From the Zealandia website. Nīkau is New Zealand’s only endemic palm tree and the world’s most southerly palm. Growing up to 15m tall with 3m long leaves, it is found in lowland forest in the North Island and as far south as Banks Peninsular and Okarito in the South Island. It is not to be confused with a tree fern as the latter reproduce via wind borne spores whereas nīkau reproduce via seeds distributed by birds. Nīkau is very slow growing; it can be 30 or more years before a trunk begins to form.
