Edward Mitch-ell, Paul Dean and Sebastian Streeter were his successors in thepastoral office. For the last-named the present structure waserected in 1838. In 1864, through the efforts of the late Stowe, it was procured for the First Baptist MarinersChurch. Mr. Stowe was pastor until his death in 1868. Since1869, Rev. Henry A. Cooke has officiated. The church is nowowned by the Boston Baptist Bethel Society. It is a free placeof worship for seamen and others. Old Copps Hill and Burial Ground. 17. ST. MARY^S CHURCH. In 1834 Bishop Fenwick, after several ineffectual attemptsto secure sufHcient land for a church in a suitable location, pur-chased four lots, 20 hy 85 feet each, on what was called Pond(now Endicott) Street. He superintended the erection of thebuilding, besides attending to his many other official was celebrated at Christmas, the following year, in thebasement. The building was completed and dedicated to theservice of God, May 22, 1836. The present edifice, which was dedicated December 16th,1877, fronts on Thacher Street 83 feet 6 inches, and extendsback on Endicott Street and Thacher Avenue 198 feet fourinches. The building is of brick, with granite caps and trim-mings.
