Washington Resigning Command of the Army

Following the American Revolution, the Continental Army was disbanded, and George Washington, who had been commander in chief, took his leave of his officers in New York on December 4, 1783. This painting by American artist John Trumbull (1756-1843) shows Washington's subsequent resignation of his command of the army to Congress, which was meeting in the Maryland State House in Annapolis on December 23, 1783. The painting now hangs in the Rotunda of the Capitol in Washington D. C.
