Wind card. Illustration of a wind card, used by marine navigators to avoid a storm. The card is a plan view of a cyclone in the southern hemisphere - in the northern hemisphere the winds rotate in the opposite direction (anti-cyclone). A navigator can gauge the winds and the rate at which they change strength and direction to calculate his position relative to the centre of the storm, and thus navigate away from it. This was first published in 'Whirlwinds and Dust Storms of India' by P. Baddeley in 1860.
