Molten Salt Reactor Experiment. Physicist observing a one-sixth scale model of Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Molten Salt Reactor Experiment (MSRE). The MSRE was operated at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA, from 1965 to 1969. It was an experimental molten salt reactor, generating energy from nuclear reactions in a molten salt mixture. In this case the fuel and coolant was a mixture of uranium and a fluoride salt. The MSRE achieved criticality on 1 June 1965, and reached its full power of 7,500 kilowatts in May 1966. Photographed circa 1968.
