The Sint Maartenskapel - also known as Barbarossa ruin - was built in 1155 on behalf of Frederik Barbarossa as the court chapel of a new castle, on the site of the old Carolingian Palatinate. During the demolition in 1795 of the Valkhofburcht, it was decided to preserve the ruins of the chapel
