Charles Lyttelton (1714-1768), British antiquarian and Bishop of Carlisle. Lyttelton was educated at Eton and University College, Oxford. After abandoning a career in law, he was ordained in 1742. He became Dean at Exeter Cathedral in 1748, overseeing its library of over 6000 books. He was made Bishop of Carlisle in 1762. He was Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (1743) and its President from 1765. He helped establish architectural history. Artwork from 'Illustrations of the Literary History of the Eighteenth Century', an 8-volume work published between 1817 and 1858 by English printer and antiquarian John Nichols and his son John Bowyer Nichols.
