Vindolanda Roman fort: replica stretches of Hadrian's Wall with stone turret, crenellated parapet & wall-walk & turf wall with timber parapet. Milecastles (fortlets) were built one Roman mile apart along the Wall with two turrets placed between them. The replica weapon is a ballista - a crossbow for firing a bolt or spear. The sites, excavations & experiments are run by the Vindolanda Trust.
