1928 - The verticle landing auto-giro, autogyro,'windmill' plane, gyroplane, rotorcraft or gyrocopter invented by Spanish engineer Juan de la Cierva. He first flew his invention on 9 January 1923, at Cuatro Vientos Airfield in Madrid. Cierva's autogyro is considered the predecessor of modern helicopters. Although the term is now used universally, Autogiro was a trademark of the Cierva Autogiro Company. The plane arrived in the USA on 11 December 1928 accompanied by test pilot Arthur Rawson.
