Gravestone of a couple and their son, who died in the first world war, giving the son's cause of death and where he died.

An example of a fairly typical Scottish grave which shows the loss of a son in the first world war - few families did not not lose someone and Scottish soldiers died in disproportionate numbers. It is not unusual for a son to be commemorated on a family tombstone even if he is buried in a military cemetery abroad. For genealogists, the mention of the cause of death is a bonus. The wife is buried with her maiden, not her married name, on the tombstone - this was normal practice until fairly recently. Nowadays, the woman's married name is used as a rule. Everyone named on the tombstone died over 50 years ago so I have not hidden the names. Scotland's People makes available full details of the deaths of anyone who died in Scotland over 50 years ago.
