Looking out the Marble Cave at the far shore of Lago General Carrera, Patagonia
Along the shores of Lago General Carrera, the erosion of a marble peninsula led to the formation of the columns, tunnels and caves of the Capillas de Marmol. Calcium carbonate is slightly soluble in water and the fantastic formations were made as the lake waters rose and started to seep through small cracks in the marble at the water surface gradually eroding away the marble. When the light is right, the milky glacial blue green waters of Lago General Carrera reflect up onto the polished curved surfaces of the Marble Caves creating an amazing blue natural rockscape.
