Beijing pollution and smoke belch from Shougang Steel (Capital Iron and Steel) chimney

Pollution from the giant Shougang steelworks, located 20km to the west of central Beijing, was long regarded as the city's worst. Ordered closed by the Chinese government in 2005, the plant continues to operate at about 20% of its former capacity. The plant's relocation to Caofeidian in Hebei province is due to be completed by 2010.
