The Rio Mapocho, flowing from the Andes in the background of this view, splits Santiago in two. It was canalised in the 19th century to manage river floods and allow urban development of the river banks. It is considered an ugly river. Autumn trees are an attraction on the river banks, illuminated, here, by the warm glow of a low angled sun in the western sky.
