More than 200 naked and nearly naked cyclists took part in the sixth annual World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) in San Francisco on June 12, 2010. Naked cyclists rode in over 50 cities around the world during the first week of June to highlight the environmental consequences of oil dependency. Many of the riders in the 2010 San Francisco WNBR painted comments on their bodies about British Petroleum and the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The ride startled tourists on the San Francisco waterfront when it started after noon on the Embarcadero, a major thoroughfare that runs along San Francisco Bay through the center of San Francisco, California.
