HE art sales of 1892 were consider-ably above the average, whilst thedispersal of the Dudley collectionwas unquestionably the great eventof the season. The compiler ofThe Years A7t points out the interesting fact thatwhereas in 1890, thirty-nine pictures realized 1,400guineas and upwards, in 1891 thirty-seven passedthat limit, no fewer than fifty-five occurred in the1892 list. The first important art sale comprisedthe stock-in-trade, porcelain, furniture and pictures,etc., of the late Samson Wertheimer, of 154, New. SAMSON WERTHEIMErs PICTURES. I 73 Bond Street, the well-known dealer, showing atotal of upwards of 7,000. The pictures weresold on March 19th, and included : K. du Jardin,The Travelling Musicians, 20 x 19, signed anddated, from the Spencer Lucy collection, 220guineas; D. Teniers, A Village Fete, a scene ofmerriment in front of a large public house, fromthe window of which flies a flag with a figure of awarrior on it, 22 x 28, 1,430 guineas ; and Interiorof a Guard-room, four military men at a tablegaming, 21 x 28, 1,700 guineas; Rembrandt,Portrait of a young woman, Hendrikje Stoffels,rising up in bed, putting the curtains back withher hand, signed, and dated 1650, engraved inmezzotint by Cooper, 32 x 26, arched, from thecollections of Prince Carignan and Lady Mildmay,5,000 guineas—the four foregoing are describedin Smith s Catalogue; F.
