Uluru (Ayers Rock). Satellite image of Uluru, the large outcrop of rock near the centre of Australia that is called Uluru by the Australian Aborigines, and was named Ayers Rock by the Australian settlers. Uluru is a steep-sided hill of sandstone rock, rising out of the surrounding plain and formed by the erosion of the material around it. Uluru is nearly 350 metres high and has a base circumference of over 9 kilometres. It is sacred to the Anangu aboriginal people. Image taken by the Ikonos satellite on 14 June 2003.
