Artist/engraver/cartographer: Cartography by Tanner; Engraved by J & C Walker. Provenance: "Maps of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge", published by Charles Knight, 90 Fleet Street, London, under the superintendance of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. Type: Antique steel engraved map. The map shows Native American Indian villages/settlements existing at the time, and the boundaries of the Choctaw and Chickasaw lands as they existed east of the Mississippi river prior to their removal in the 1830's in the so-called Trail of Tears. Following the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek (1830), the Choctaw emigrated in three stages up to 1833, the year in which this map was engraved. The Chickasaw emigrated in 1837.
