Nebraska State Trooper using laptop computer in cruiser to read output from an Automated License Plate Reader, LPR.
The Automated License Plate Reader, or LPR, can read vehicle license plates extremely fast. Even when the vehicle equipped with the LPR is moving fast, license plates are read quickly and accurately. The license plates read are compared against a national database over stolen plates, stolen vehicles, missing persons, individuals (vehicle owner) with outstanding felony warrants etc. Using the LPR the Troopers can run a large number of license plates automatically which is very efficient. These units cost roughly $20,000 per vehicle.
