The Vienna galleries : giving a brief history of the public and private galleries of Vienna ; with a critical description of the paintings therein contained . eation in strong allegorical representation of Vanity (), attacked by Death and defended by Slander, gives us a first view of the painting of the nude,to which the German artists never became over-partial. Most characteristic of the Teutonic love of storytelling is the work of Leonhard Beck, who enteredthe painters Guild of Augsburg in 1503, and diedin that city in 1542. There is a crowding of incidentand detail in his St. George (No. 1431. PlateXX) which is not found in any other school. Inthis finely painted picture, in which the figures arerepeated to tell the progress of the story, the land-scape part is wonderfully rich. A Deer-hunt (No. 1452) is a queer scene in which theElector of Saxony plays a part as if the hunt wereorderly arranged upon a large stage. No. 1454 isa droll portrayal of an enamoured old man with agirl. The fine Rest on the Flight to Egypt, anearly work which is now in the Berlin Museum, isshown here in an excellent contemporane
