Amen Re and Attributes

This illustration dates to 1904 and shows the Egyptian god Amun Re (also spelled Amon and Amen and Ra) with his attributes (symbols), as they were portrayed in the Late Egyptian period and especially after the Ptolemies came to be rulers of Egypt. The symbols include the solar disk about his head, encircled by serpents and topped by a pair of ram's horns (the ram was sacred to Amun Re), each with a disk on it. Two very long plumes are above his head, each ending in a lion-headed uraeus from which moisture is flowing. One hand is raised to support the disk; the other holds the phallus, the symbol of creation and birth. His torso is shaped to resemble that of the sacred scarab beetle, a widely used Egyptian symbol of life, He is shown as having two additional hands, The one to the upper left holds the royal flail, while the hand to the upper right holds the scepter—both symbols of royal power. As feet, he has the paws and claws of a lion. Behind him are the wings of a hawk. Hanging from his waist area is a tail, which had been a royal and divine symbol since early times.
