The Clarendon Colony.—Soon after, (1663),Charles II. gave to Lord Clarendon and others, a grant of allthe land between Virginia and Florida. Two years later, asettlement was made near the mouth of the Cape Fear Kiver,by a party of emigrants from Barba- does (bar-da-doze). This was called^* The Clarendon Colony. 3. The Carteret Colony.— In 1670, a third settlement called The Carteret Colony was made atOld Charleston, on the south side ofthe Ashley River.^ Ten years after-wards, these colonists removed to a seal op south Carolina.
