Alpine Accentor. Plate 83. Meyer's British Birds. 1844.

British Birds. Henry Leonard Meyer. 2nd Edition. London. 1842-47. Imaged at 1,200ppi directly from a large octavo (150 x 225 mm) set. Mildly cleaned with severely obtrusive over-painting faults and foxing corrected. Otherwise untouched. These near 200 year old images will reveal further underlying faults if severely treated. Print off-setting is entirely absent. Final minimal contrast and brightness adjustments returned the slightly faded originals back to their initial condition. The complete, 7 volume work comprises 322 species, including their eggs (not shown here). All are exquisitely rendered in spite of being produced by etching on stone. Many images have pale blue-washed backgrounds not previously visible. Best rendered at 600dpi on A4 semi-matt paper.
