DNA molecule. Computer molecular graphic of a Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) molecule. DNA encodes an organism's hereditary characteristics. The atoms have been colour-coded: hydrogen is white, carbon is grey, nitrogen is blue, oxygen is red and phosphorus is yellow. DNA strands have sugar- phosphate backbones which wind around each other to form a double helix shape. The two backbones are connected together by nitrogen-containing nucleotide bases. The exact sequence of nucleotides along the molecule determines the genetic code.
