"Head and Shoulders" portrait of mature Herring Gull, Larus argentatus, against blue sky.

The Herring Gull is the commonest gull around European coasts and has colonised many cities as nesting sites, feeding on rubbish. It is widely regarded as a pest. The red spot on the bill is part of breeding behaviour - chicks peck at it to stimulate the regurgitation of food.
