Berlin, jumper,Jumping soldier German Border guard, Conrad Schumann, jumps over barbed wire to escape from East Berlin during building of wall. Conrad Schumann was a19 year old East German border guard who defected to West Germany during the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961. On 15 August 1961, he was sent to the corner of Ruppiner Straße and Bernauer Straße to guard the Berlin Wall on its third day of construction. Only a roll of barbed wire separated him form West Berlin and he made a spontanous leap for freedom. A West German police car pulled up to wait for him and drove him away from the scene. West German photographer Peter Leibing photographed Schumann’s escape and this picture has become an iconic image of the Cold War era
