An historic Victorian sketch of the Royal Hotel, Briggate, Leeds. UK (Formerly the New King's Arms) in order to distinguish it from its nearby more ancient neighbour the Old King's Arms. In the early coaching era it was known as the New King's Arms Inn and in 1765, the year in which coaches first began to run from the house, when the landlord's name was Myers it was called the New Inn. Widow Cowling and William lodge succeeded him as licensees. Widow Cowling later returned and changed its name to Cowling's Hotel and Tavern.
