The 40th Infantry Division ('Sunshine Division') is a modular division of the United States Army. Its division headquarters is located in Los Alamitos, California, USA. After seeing service in World War I as a depot division, it was reorganised as the National Guard division for California, Nevada, and Utah, before seeing service in the Pacific in World War II. The division again saw active service in the Korean War (1950–53). In March 1951 the division was deployed to Japan for training. It then moved to Korea in January 1952 where it participated in the battles of Sandbag Castle and Heartbreak Ridge. The division remained in Korea until May 1954. The headquarters moved to Tokyo in 1953, then to Yokohama and finally to Camp Zama, 35 miles southwest of Tokyo, in October that year. In post-war Japan the US occupying forces had made military, political, economic and social reforms. Technically in 1952 its occupation came to an end but even today the USA maintains a strong military presence there. This image is from an anonymous American soldier's amateur Kodak colour transparency who included a date to his photographs but did not label exact location details. It will look slightly soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1950s photograph.
