A float in a parade by the Chicano community in Los Angeles, California, USA, 1970 (Chicanos and Chicanas are men and women of Mexican descent). Independence Day (Día de la Independencia) is a public holiday in Mexico on the 16th September to celebrate liberation from Spanish rule in 1810. The float is advertising the First Street Store. Women on it are dressed wearing colourful fabrics. This image is from a transparency taken by an amateur photographer and was shot in very poor lighting conditions – a vintage 1970s photograph.

Independence Day (Día de la Independencia) is a public holiday in Mexico on the 16th September to celebrate liberation from Spanish rule in 1810. The float is advertising the First Street Store. Women on it are dressed wearing colourful fabrics. At its height in the 1950s and 60s, the First Street had more than 130 employees but it closed in 2007. This image is from a transparency taken by an amateur photographer and was shot in very poor lighting conditions. It will look soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1970s photograph.
