Tipping bucket rain gauge. Rain gauges, also called pluviometers, are used to measure the amount of rain (precipitation) falling at a particular location. This is a tipping bucket rain gauge from the Plessey company, and dates from the 1960s. Tipping bucket rain gauges funnel rain into a see-saw-like container that tips the water out when full to trigger and record a signal. This allows the intensity of the rainfall to be monitored. The data gathered is used by the Met Office, the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service. Photographed at the Met Office facilities in Beaufort Park, Bracknell, UK.
