Artist William Alexander accompanied Lord Macartney on the Macartney Mission, the first British diplomatic mission to China, in 1793. Shown here is a the 'Pagoda of Linsing of 9 stories', which stood where the Eu-Ho River intersects with the Grand Canal, sketched from a junk.
